Féile na Gaeilge
Irish Language Day

Exploring Neighborhood and Community Through Language

Sunday, April 26 | 12 pm - 6:30 pm

$20 students and seniors / $28 member / $35 non-member

Your registration includes a ticket to the screening of Men At Lunch at 4:30 pm. Click here for details.

We have 4 levels this year:

Absolute Beginner | Beginner | Intermediate | Advanced

Let’s visit the heart of Hell’s Kitchen and explore one of New York City’s famed neighborhoods, as Gaeilge.

An area traditionally known for its large Irish-American population and rough character, Hell’s Kitchen has experienced significant urban renewal since the 1980s and is now home to a thriving arts scene. This Féile na Gaeilge, come celebrate the Irish language through an exploration of IAC’s neighborhood, or comharsanacht, of Hell’s Kitchen. Part walking tour of the area, part discussion of your neighborhood, and a whole lot of fun, language enthusiasts will be immersed in language sessions, conversation, workshops, and more.

After you’ve learned specific vocabulary and phrases, you’ll enjoy a stop at the historical Landmark Tavern to discuss what you’ve seen that day!

We’ll send you a survey once you’ve signed up for Irish Language Day to ensure we place you in the right level (Absolute Beginner, Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced).

(In Irish Language with English Subtitles; 75 minutes).

Following the film, Donall O’Healai will lead a discussion on the film, in the style of his class, Irish Language TV and Film. (More information on that class can be found here)

saoirse

Saoirse? (Irish with English subtitles)

Saoirse? An dara scannán stairiúil a rinne Gael Linn faoin gcaoi ar baineadh féin rialtas amach in Éirinn. Tosaíonn an scannán le bunú Dháil Éireann sa bhliain 1919. Léirítear ansin an choimhlint armtha agus agóid phobail a bhí forleathan sna blianta 1919-20. Tús an chogaidh chathartha ar láthair na nCeithre Cúirteanna i mBaile Átha Cliath an chríoch thragóideach atá le SAOIRSE?.

George Morrison a stiúraigh Saoirse? agus cuireadh an scannán ar taispeáint den chéad uair  i 1961. Cuireadh na múrtha fáilte roimhe agus bhí iomrá ach go háirithe ar an cheol le Seán Ó Riada.

The Gael Linn film Saoirse? (Freedom?) depicts the Irish struggle for independence in the years 1919 to 1922 – as recoreded by the newsfilm camera operators of the time – and the part played in the policital events of those years by leaders, on all sides, such as Éamon de Valéra, Arthur Griffith, Michael Collins, Cathal Brugha, Richard Mulcahy, Tomás MacCurtain, Terence MacSwiney, Sir James Craig, King George V, David Lloyd George, Lord Birkenhead and Winston Churchill.

Directed by George Morrison, the film went on release in 1961 to great acclaim, the music score by Seán Ó Riada proving particularly popular
