In Current Chords, artist John Spinks examines and reinterprets the language of music—a language he appreciates but does not “speak”—through his own vocabulary of the brush stroke and collage on canvas. At the core of the compositions is Spinks’ integration of musical notations with the fluidity expressed in imagery of the ocean. Through these textured mixed media canvases, he compares the arc of the creative process of both art forms— how the quick brush stroke or drawn line relates to musical improvisation. And in turn, when the song is recorded and the painting is complete, how the artist moves through the stages of creation to the final moment where the note is played and the mark is made.

John Spinks is a County Clare born artist living and working in Brooklyn. Spinks returns to the IAC Gallery with Current Chords. His previous show at IAC in 2009, Corresponding Approaches, was a collection of mixed-media works and focused on words composed with his father’s handwritten letters.
