Masters in Collaboration X
Colin Dunne Meets Nic Gareiss

May 14 - 15 | 8 PM

Our first artists’ residency begun in 2008, and the acclaimed Masters in Collaboration series returns for its tenth iteration breaking more new ground, pairing two IAC favorites: the iconic and innovative Irish dance legend Colin Dunne (Riverdance, Dancing on Dangerous Ground, Out of Time) and the thrilling, expressive percussive dancer Nic Gareiss, (This is How we Fly). Over a week-long residency, Colin and Nic will collaborate as dancers and choreographers, developing new work, inviting audiences into some of their most intimate and surprising moments in the creative process.

“For Colin Dunne—one-time Riverdance performer— tradition is something to be carefully maintained… But that doesn’t mean he can’t deconstruct step dancing and put it together again in his own inimitable fashion.” - The Irish Times

Colin Dunne is a leading figure in the world of traditional Irish dance. Perhaps best known internationally for his performances and choreography in Riverdance and Dancing on Dangerous Ground, he has been forging a new creative path since his time as artist in residence at University of Limerick where he completed an MA in contemporary dance in 2002. Since then he has worked as an independent performer, choreographer and teacher.

"The human epitome of the unbearable lightness of being...the most inventive and expressive step dancer on the scene." - The Irish Times

Nic Gareiss is an Michigan-born dancer, musician, and dance researcher. His choreographic work re-imagines movement as a musical activity, recasting dance as medium that appeals to both eyes and ears. Gareiss draws from many percussive dance traditions to weave together a dance technique facilitating his love of improvisation, traditional dance footwork vocabulary, and musical collaboration. Nic holds a degree in Anthropology from Central Michigan University and a MA in Ethnochoreology from the University of Limerick.

Launched by Irish Arts Center in 2008, the Masters in Collaboration series fosters artistic partnerships outside the pressures of the marketplace in an effort to stimulate creativity, reward risk, and awaken a dynamic conversation across genres., generations, and geographies. Past series have included Paul Brady with Sarah Siskind, Andy Irvine with John Doyle, Bill Whelan with Athena Tergis, Martin Hayes and Dennis Cahill with Gregory Harrington, Iarla Ó Lionáird with Ivan Goff, Seamus Begley with Joanie Madden, Karan Casey with Aoife O’Donovan, Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh with Cleek Schrey, and Dana Lyn with Louis de Paor.
