Darrah Carr Dance
Celtic Jazz Tryst
with Tara O’Grady & her Black Velvet Band
Featuring guest choreographer Seán Curran
November 18 - 20
“Darrah Carr Dance performs its Eire-inflected swing to live music by jazz vocalist Tara O'Grady and her Black Velvet Band; choreographer Seán Curran also contributes his own exuberant fusion work On the Six.” – Time Out New York
“Putting a new wrinkle into New York modern dance with a program of pieces that add Irish step dancing to the modern mix.” – The New York Times
“[Tara O’Grady] brings Bessie Smith into this century with lickety-split swing.” –New York Music Daily
On the heels of last season's electric collaboration, Bessie award-nominated Darrah Carr Dance reunites with “Irish-American Jazz Powerhouse" (Irish Central) Tara O'Grady and her Black Velvet Band for Celtic Jazz Tryst—a delightful fusion of swing dance, tap rhythms, and Irish dance steps set to OGrady’s jaunty sound spanning Celtic, folk, funk, blues, jazz, and swing. These exuberant new works feature a cast of championship Irish dancers including Trent Kowalik, the original star of Broadway’s Billy Elliot, and Timothy Kochka, two-time winner of the Word Irish Dancing Championships and seven-year member of Riverdance. As a special highlight of the program, guest choreographer Seán Curran will evoke the romance and charm of the Big Band Era with his whimsical piece On the Six.
Be transported to a bygone era for a guaranteed swinging good time!
Celtic Jazz Tryst is made possible in part with public funds from Creative Engagement, supported by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council and the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and administered by Lower Manhattan Cultural Council. Darrah Carr Dance's family programs are also supported by the American Ireland Fund.
