Direct from its world premiere at the Abbey Theatre, Maeve’s House is a beautiful, poignant show about shared experiences and brief encounters.
From the modest brick houses and small gardens of Dublin’s Ranelagh village to the towering glory of Manhattan, Maeve Brennan was a pioneering Irish writer, admired as much for her intelligence and wit as her beauty and style. Her “bittersweet chronicle of New York in transition in the 1950s and 60s” (NYT) graced The New Yorker’s famed “Talk of the Town” section while her tender, memory-filled fiction reflected her own fragmented upbringing in Ireland.
Brennan set most of her short stories in Ranelagh, a leafy suburb in Dublin, in the same house Irish actor Eamon Morrissey would grow up in 20 years later. In 1966, while performing on Broadway in Brian Friel’s Philadelphia Here I Come!, Eamon picked up The New Yorker and was surprised to discover his family home brought vividly to life in Brennan’s story “Twelfth Wedding Anniversary.” Thus began his journey to meet this mysterious woman.

Eamon Morrissey is one of Ireland’s best-loved actors. He has starred in over one hundred productions at the Abbey Theatre, including the premieres of Borstal Boy (1967), Famine (1968), The Freedom of the City (1973), Canaries (1980), The Broken Jug (1994) and Savoy (2004). As well as appearing in the U.S. premieres of Brian Friel’s Philadelphia, Here I Come! and Lovers on Broadway, Eamon has also toured extensively in Europe, the U.S., Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Film and television credits include Eat the Peach, The Fitz and Father Ted and Hall’s Pictorial Weekly on RTÉ.
