The Oscar-nominated writer of the worldwide bestseller Room returns to Irish Arts Center to read from her riveting new masterpiece The Wonder. After Donoghue’s reading, she will be joined in conversation with American novelist and screenwriter Sheri Holman.

Emma Donoghue again delves into the emotional life of a child with an intimate and mysterious tale of two strangers and how they change each other's lives forever. Set in 1850s rural Ireland and written with all the propulsive tension that made Room a huge bestseller, The Wonder tells of Anna, a girl who has stopped eating but mysteriously remains alive, and Lib, the English nurse charged with observing Anna. This powerful psychological thriller is a searing examination of faith, doubt, forgiveness, and love pitted against evil.

Born in Dublin in 1969, Emma Donoghue is an Irish emigrant twice over: she spent eight years in Cambridge doing a PhD in eighteenth century literature before moving to London, Ontario. She migrates between genres, writing for screen, stage, and radio as well as historical and contemporary novels and short stories. Her other books include Frog Music, Astray, The Sealed Letter, and Slammerkin.

ABOUT THE MODERATOR

Sheri Holman is a novelist and television writer. She has written four novels published by Grove/Atlantic, including The Dress Lodger, a national bestseller and New York Times Notable Book; The Mammoth Cheese, named a Publisher's Weekly and San Francisco Chronicle Book of the Year and shortlisted for the UK's Orange Prize; and most recently, Witches on the Road Tonight, a New York Times Book Review's Editor's Choice, and winner of the Shirley Jackson Award for Best Novel. Sheri is currently a writer on the popular drama Longmire, a Netflix Original series. She is a founding member of the story-telling collective The Moth, and her stories can be heard on the Moth's radio show and podcast. She lives in Brooklyn with her family.
