The Book of Me A Children’s Exhibition  Presented in association with Police Athletic League William J. Duncan Center On Display Through September 14 Gallery viewings by appointment Monday-Friday | 10 am – 6 pm Please call 212-757-3318 During the month of August, teaching artist Pamella Allen will devise an exhibition with a group of young students from Irish Arts Center’s local Hell’s Kitchen community. Exploring the famous Irish illuminated manuscript, The Book of Kells, students will take part in an artist residency to create their own handmade books based on their life, family, culture, and relationship to their neighborhood. Through papermaking, bookbinding, illustration, and creative writing techniques, this immersive and interactive project will awaken the creativity of our youngest neighbors and bring to life their own cultures and traditions.

Pamella Allen: A world traveller, community advocate, educator, and mentor, Pamella Allen is most of all, an artist with an agenda. After spending several years living and working in Africa, India, Europe and sailing the North Atlantic, the Aegean and the Caribbean, Ms. Allen set up her studio in Brooklyn, where she has created some of her most powerful work to date. Her stirring and insightful works have been featured in galleries around the globe and hang in private homes on several continents.  It is in her mission to bring art into the community that Pamella worked on diverse projects such as the TED Inside Out project and the Sonya Studio Stroll in Fort Green and Clinton Hill. As a teaching artist, Ms. Allen continues to inspire her students to greater creativity and dialogue.

Teaching Assistant

Sarah Burton Whicker was born in NC and now lives in NYC. She studied at Bennington college specializing in puppet fabrication. She has worked in Los Angeles building large scale foam puppets and costumes for clients like Mad TV, and Tenacious D. In New York she makes puppets and dioramas artists and institutions ranging from independent film makers and theatre artists to the American Museum of Natural History. She is a founding member of the gallery space and art collective Horse House and her drawings and comics can be seen at Printed Matter. In her own work she combines traditional methods of Eastern European marionette making with animation, illustration and doll making.
